National Domestic Violence Advocacy Orgs

Amber “Sunshine” Yugovich was a beloved mother, grandmother, and friend from the school I went to "Auburn High Class of 84/85". Her life was full of light, laughter, and love for her family. She was the kind of person who made others feel safe and cared for. But her story ended in the most tragic way—taken by the hands of someone who claimed to love her. I will not let this STAND!!!

Amber’s Story

In April 2024, Amber traveled to Nicaragua with her long-time boyfriend, Brian David Bell. On April 6, her family received the devastating news: Amber had been found brutally murdered near Granada.

Her body showed horrific signs of violence—head injuries, missing teeth, and evidence of sexual assault. The man she trusted, Brian Bell, was arrested for her murder.

Amber’s family was left shattered, facing not only the unbearable grief of losing her but also the struggle of navigating international laws to bring her home.

Domestic Abuse and the System’s Blind Eye

Amber’s story is not isolated. Domestic abuse is a cycle of fear, control, and silence. Too often, victims are dismissed, ignored, or left unprotected until it’s too late. When their voices go unheard, abuse escalates—moving from threats and manipulation to violence, and in the worst cases, to murder.

The justice system often compounds the harm. Domestic abuse is minimized with weak charges, short sentences, or early releases that do not reflect the devastation left behind. This failure tells abusers that their actions carry little consequence, while families are forced to carry grief that never ends.

When a murderer can walk free in just a few short years, the message is clear: victims’ lives are not valued as they should be. Amber’s life mattered. Every victim’s life matters. Yet as long as the system continues to turn a blind eye, abusers are given second chances their victims will never have.

Breaking the Silence

Domestic abuse is not only about physical violence—it is about power, control, and silence. Victims are often trapped by fear, financial dependence, social stigma, or the hope that their abuser will change. Far too often, their voices are dismissed by friends, family, and even the institutions that are supposed to protect them.

When these cries for help go unheard, abuse escalates. What begins with intimidation, manipulation, or isolation can spiral into severe physical violence, and tragically, as in Amber’s case, it can end in murder.

The System’s Failure

The justice system frequently treats domestic abuse as a “private matter,” or minimizes it with reduced sentences and early releases. This failure sends a chilling message: the lives of victims are negotiable. The cycle continues as abusers are emboldened by lenient consequences, while families like Amber’s are left to carry a lifetime of grief.

The Human Cost

Behind every statistic is a story—a mother who will never see her children grow, a grandmother whose arms will never again hold her grandchildren, a friend whose laughter is silenced. Amber’s life mattered. Every victim’s life matters. Yet the current system often values the rights of abusers over the rights of those they harm.

A Call to Action

We cannot allow domestic abuse to remain hidden in the shadows or tolerated by weak sentencing. Change must come through:

  • Stronger laws and sentencing guidelines that reflect the severity of domestic abuse and homicide.

  • Accountability in international prisoner transfers, so sentences cannot be quietly reduced.

  • Community awareness and prevention efforts, to identify and intervene before abuse turns fatal.

Amber’s story must be more than a tragedy—it must be a turning point.

Why We Must Act

Brian Bell must not be allowed to walk free after only 7 years. To release him so soon would dishonor Amber’s memory and endanger others. Amber deserves better. Her family deserves better. Our communities deserve better.

We are calling on lawmakers, the Department of Justice, and every person who believes in true justice to stand with us. Sentences must reflect the gravity of the crime, and the loopholes that let murderers walk free must be closed.

Take Action

  • ✍️ Sign and share petitions demanding that Brian Bell serve a sentence proportionate to his crime.

  • 📞 Contact your representatives and demand reforms to prisoner transfer laws that allow these reductions.

  • 📢 Speak out about domestic abuse—raise awareness, share Amber’s story, and stand with survivors.

Amber “Sunshine” Yugovich should be remembered for the joy she brought into this world, not for the injustice that followed her death. Together, we can make sure her light continues to shine by fighting for accountability, reform, and true justice.

Why this matters to me?

I went to "Auburn High School - Class of 84" with Amber and absolutely adored her — I always had a crush on her. In 2010, I was blessed to reconnect with her, and we met for lunch. My intention was to ask her out and finally pursue what I had always hoped for. She looked amazing, just as vibrant and full of light as I remembered.

At that time, though, Amber had just started dating Brian and told me she wanted to give the relationship a chance. She even admitted I was making her decision very difficult. Because I truly cared for her, I stepped back, thinking that if it was meant to be, life would give me another chance in the future. To this day, I regret not pursuing her more — but I will never regret respecting her choice.

Now, after the tragedy of losing Amber, I feel called by God to seek justice on her behalf. I am on a mission to hold Brian accountable for what he did to my dear friend, and I believe Amber’s story must be told so that no one else suffers this kind of injustice.

If you knew Amber, I would love the opportunity to record your story for a documentary I am creating. This project will share her light, her impact, and her legacy — while pressing lawmakers to ensure Brian is not released after only seven short years. Together, we can help make sure he serves a sentence that honors Amber’s life.

Please contact me at dave@medialegends.com, and let’s set up a time in Auburn to sit down and share your memories of Amber.
